Something Different Here's something new a little different that is food for thought:
At a church in Washington, hundreds of committed Christians met recently and tried to map out a strategy to get their values into the political debate. But these are not the conservative Christian values which have been so influential lately. This is the religious left. "Jesus called us to love our neighbor, love our enemy, care for the poor, care for the outcast, and that's really the moral core of where we think the nation ought to go," Dr. Bob Edgar, General Secretary of the National Council of Churches told CBS News correspondent Russ Mitchell. The National Council of Churches represents about 50 million Christians in America — the majority of them mainline

The Christian left is focusing on:
  • Fighting poverty
  • Protecting the environment
  • Ending the war in Iraq "Right now the war in Iraq costs us $1 billion per week," said Rev. Jim Wallis, a Christian activist. "And we can't get $5 billion over ten years for child care in this country?" To try to attract young voters and the attention of politicians who want their votes, leaders of the religious left are promoting issues like raising the minimum wage. "Nine million families are working full time," Wallis said. "Working hard full time, responsibly, and not making it." Three decades ago liberal religious leaders had a powerful influence on politics.
  • Talk amongst yourselves. This church is garnering some attention as other left-leaning churches are discussing things not affiliated with those religious icons who show up on mainstream media shows every other day.
    Comments:
Thank God someone is starting to complain about the misrepresentation of true Christian values.

Bush and gang are fire and brimstone Old Testament Christians. However ... Christ doesn't appear in the Old Testament.

If a person truly belives they are saved solely by grace and acts commensurately, you have to 'fire' the Jesus of huckstering, elitism and the Jesus that condones our gross materialism. This is difficult because accepting that grace cuts both ways politically and ideologically. Wallis is a great example of someone who 'gets it'.

What seems liberal or left-leaning to evangelical political conservatives is really nothing more than trying to move the church to a place where it truly comforts the afflicted and afflicts the comfortable..

True church is rarely comfortable and I hope that the so-called left-leaning congregations can make a difference at the same time they understand that the sword of grace doesn't swing politically.

the constitution does not allow 1$ to fight poverty.

Yes John, it is called plunder, and if the government does it, then it is called a 'tax' and is lawfull (not really),but if you do it, it is called robbery. So you yourself said it is WRONG. then why allow our Federal government to do it? Now the state government and local government is a different matter...
